How is this different from Apple's built-in Screen Time?

Apple's Screen Time has an "Ignore Limit" button — one tap and your limit is gone. Cala uses real Screen Time shields that can't be tapped past. In Strict mode, even disabling a schedule is delayed by 15 minutes. In Locked mode, there's no unlock at all.

Can I bypass it?

In Standard mode, you can unlock after a breathing exercise — but access is timeboxed and auto-relocks. In Strict mode, unlocking requires a longer breathing exercise that escalates with repeated attempts, and disabling is delayed. In Locked mode, the app is simply unavailable. You choose the level that matches your commitment.

Is my data safe?

Cala doesn't track which specific apps you open or for how long — Apple's opaque tokens make this technically impossible. Your block list stays on-device, and there's no account or email collection. Cala uses product analytics tied to anonymous identifiers to improve the app, and we do not sell your personal information.

Why should I pay when some apps are free?

Free apps typically offer one mechanism — a delay timer, a breathing pause, or basic blocking. Cala is a complete system: real blocking + breathing friction + timeboxed access + habits + configurable strictness + behavioral insights. The free tier is genuinely useful. What if I need an app in an emergency?

Every user gets one emergency unlock per day — 5 minutes of access, no breathing exercise required. In Locked mode, you can optionally disable even this. The emergency unlock resets at 4 AM each day.

Does the breathing exercise actually help?

Yes. The breathing pattern (4s inhale, 2s hold, 4s exhale) activates your parasympathetic nervous system — the same mechanism used in clinical anxiety interventions. It breaks the autopilot loop between "I'm bored" and "I opened Instagram." Many users report that the pause alone is enough to change their mind.
